God Is the Source

The chief jailer paid no heed to anything that was in Joseph’s care, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
Genesis 39:23
If the road ahead is perfectly smooth and unswerving, if there is no rising or falling, no exits to worry about and no merging traffic, then we may travel it carelessly. But if there are rough patches, sharp turns, or other travelers who might interfere with our progress, then adjustments will have to be made—both for our own good and that of others. Most of those adjustments I trust myself to make. But what do I know of what's around the next curve? So I must trust God for the rest.

In the Book of Genesis, the most beautiful example of this is found in the story of Joseph. Though much of what happens to Joseph seems tragic, by the end of his story we see that, throughout his life, God was at work, providing salvation for Joseph, his father, and even his brothers who had intended him harm.

If we trust in God, it will be difficult for us to take credit for growth and goodness even as we cease casting blame when things don't go as we planned. While we should always seek the good, it is helpful to know when it doesn't happen that God is still at work in our lives and in our church to bring wholeness to God's people.

I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.
 1 Corinthians 3:6
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Help me to look to you as the Source of all good, O Eternal One, to give you credit when things go well, and not to cast blame on others when things that are beyond my understanding happen despite my hopes or plans.
