Oh, Freedom

The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners.

Isaiah 61:1
Freedom. It's what Isaiah prophesied, it's what Jesus read about from the scroll when he began his ministry, and it's what Paul reminded the Galatians to stand upon. Freedom from the bondage of slavery is what Moses gained for Israel in the exodus. And freedom from the bondage of death is what Christ gained for all of us in the resurrection. Freedom is perhaps the most important concept in the Bible.

In Christ, we can live our lives simultaneously free of the impossible requirements of the law and free of the bondage of sin. We can live free of what others think, free of materialism. We can live free of labels attached to status, gender, or ethnicity. Yet we often choose to prioritize the very chains that Christ has specifically broken.

May my life this day be a pilgrimage toward freedom, as I consciously and conscientiously thank God for the Spirit of freedom from all that would hold me back.

For freedom Christ has set us free. Stand firm, therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.
 Galatians 5:1
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Thank you, O Holy Spirit, for the broad places in which you have set me, that I might feel your breeze and move forward into freedom.

After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
