Mutual Giving

For lo, the one who forms the mountains, creates the wind, reveals his thoughts to mortals, makes the morning darkness, and treads on the heights of the earth—the Lord, the God of hosts, is his Name!
Amos 4:13
It should be enough that we look at the mountains and valleys and lakes and oceans and worship the God who made them. It should be enough that we stand amazed by a new snowfall, or feel the breeze on our face or the rain on our head, or watch a colorful sunset, and acknowledge the One that made all this happen. But we are preoccupied or, worse yet, forgetful. The Creator of the universe, despite all that we see and experience on a daily basis, seems too remote from us.

But God sent us One who brings the Divine much closer to home. God gave us a Son bearing our flesh, even as we bear his Image. What's more, the giving was mutual. As God gave him to us, so God gave us to him. He is ours and we are his. In Christ we are family, children of the Most High, whose Name is Love, and whose will is that we make that Name known to all.

I have made your Name known to those whom you gave me from the world. They were yours, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me is from you.
 John 17:6-7
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Help me to see your love in creation, O God: Your power in mountain grandeur, your Spirit in the gentle breeze, and your image in the face of my neighbor. As you have given your human creation over to the care of your Son, so we should love one another even as we love him.
After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
