See the Tree in a Seed

O Lord God, you have only begun to show your servant your greatness and your might; what god in heaven or on earth can perform deeds and mighty acts like yours!
Deuteronomy 3:24
Richard Sibbes (1577-1635) was a relatively moderate member of the clergy during an age of extremes. He agreed with one group while continuing to worship with the other. And he was able to see the beginnings of great goodness in the lives of those who hadn't yet demonstrated much of the glory of God. "See a flame in a spark, a tree in a seed," he once said; "see great things in little beginnings."

It's good to remember this when we consider other people. Whether we see it or not, God has begun to show forth divine love and power in their lives. It's important to nurture the seed that's been planted in them.

But just as importantly, it's important to recognize the seed planted in ourselves. Alive in every disciple is the very hope of the glory of God, because Christ dwells within us. Instead of nursing self-doubt, resentment of others, or cynicism, let us today nurture Christ in our hearts.

To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
 Colossians 1:27
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
My life is lived in you, Lord, because you dwell within me. Help me, therefore, to nurture the good, that your glory may be revealed in my attitudes, words, and actions.
After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
