Wholeness in a Fragmented World

Sometimes the Bible has such a beautiful way of saying things that it's often just out of our everyday mind's immediate grasp. Such is the case (for me at least) with Leviticus 26:5—
Your threshing shall overtake the vintage, and the vintage shall overtake the sowing; you shall eat your bread to the full, and live securely in your land.
This was part of the promise of wholeness made to those who walked God's paths. And it simply means that there would always be more than enough. There must have been many times in the history of God's people when this promise was fulfilled. But there were also times when those who most closely followed God's ways went hungry or thirsty.
But in the life of Christ, we see the promise fulfilled in a new way—a way which his followers have never forgotten. In the only miracle of Jesus recorded in all four gospels—that of the feeding of the five thousand—we see that the smallest amount of food was enough for a huge multitude. And even then, there was enough left over to feed many more (Matthew 14:20)—
And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.
We remember this event because we realize that, more than anything else, it represents Christ's ability to satisfy us in ways that physical food cannot. Wholeness is not just eating and drinking until we're full. It is the very presence of God's Spirit, the promise that we will never be forsaken, and a foretaste of the holy supper that unites disciples in all places and at all times. When our church says that we are part of "a movement for wholeness in a fragmented world," this is what we mean.
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Good Shepherd of the sheep, by whom the lost are sought and guided into the fold; feed us and we shall be satisfied, heal us and we shall be whole, and lead us that we may be with you.
