Do Remember Me

You have always been my helper. Don’t leave me now; don’t abandon me, O God of my salvation!
Psalm 27:9 (NLT)
Throughout the history of God's people, we have prayed that God would not forget us when we needed God the most. Through slavery and exile, sickness and sin, the prayer has been the same: "Don't abandon me now that I finally realize how much I need you!"

Perhaps the most dramatic illustration of this was the thief on the cross next to Jesus. It's possible the only person on earth that Good Friday who truly believed in Christ was this villain. The disciples had fled—afraid, in denial, one even having betrayed him. A few faithful women followed him all the way, but their understanding of the work of Christ at that moment was far from complete. Alone among humanity was this crucified criminal who, as it turns out, was in the sunshine of faith. At that moment, only he was given to say, "I believe!"

Certainly God loves us when we are near the end. But God has loved us from the beginning. May we believe in the words of Christ today, and experience his wholeness not only in the life to come, but in the love, peace, and justice to which we have been called in the here and now.
The thief said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”
 Luke 23:42-43
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Lord Jesus, King of heaven, Sovereign of earth, you through whom all creation came about, remember me. Grant me your wholeness, and strengthen me to walk with you through all the days and nights to come.

After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
