Firm Foundation

Keep my statutes, and observe them; I am the Lord; I sanctify you.
Leviticus 20:8
Alexander Maclaren (1826-1910) called the Sermon on the Mount "the King’s proclamation of the law of His Kingdom." And there are several indications that this is true. For example, both Moses and Jesus gave their pronouncements from the mountain, and the Beatitudes are the New Testament counterpart of the Old Testament's Ten Commandments. At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus presented us with three contrasting pairs comparing obedience to his words to disobedience. Of these three, I think the clearest and most convincing is the one concerning foundations: To build our lives on the principles presented in this sermon is to stand on the firmness of rock, while to adhere to other principles is to dwell on shifting sand.

Christ's teachings concerning integrity, unconditional love, and nonviolence seem difficult to follow, but only they offer a truly firm foundation upon which a Christian life can be built.

Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
 Matthew 7:24
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Grant me the grace, O God, to build my life on the sure foundation of your love.
