A Way Forward

My companions who went up with me made the heart of the people melt; yet I wholeheartedly followed the Lord my God.
Joshua 14:8
When Moses sent a group of men to scout out the Promised Land, most brought back reports that were intended to frighten and discourage the people. But Joshua spoke honestly, for God would have the people move forward. Though his companions saw the same truth Joshua did, they were willing to let go of it, hoping that by saying, "It's too hard," they could stick to the status quo.

Change is difficult. Progress is hard. And so sometimes we latch onto any excuse not to have to participate in it. Joshua, however, saw what God showed him, and that's the truth he held onto. It wouldn't be easy, but progress was possible. Even though Israel had grown comfortable with the place they'd come to know, God showed Joshua a way out of the wilderness.

When God shares divine truth with us, we are in possession of something precious. When the light of Christ shines beyond our bondage, showing us what freedom looks like, the child of God seizes the opportunity for liberation. When we're in the wilderness, and the Holy Spirit shows us the way out, it may not be easy, but we can't stay put if God is leading us forward. Too often, we accept defeat when victory is just a leap of faith away. May we commit to taking hold of the vision God gives us, so that we may move with the church toward the Kindom of God.

Hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown. If you conquer, I will make you a pillar in the temple of my God.
 Revelation 3:11-12
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Open my eyes, that I may see
glimpses of truth thou hast for me;
place in my hands the wonderful key
that shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for thee,
ready, my God, thy will to see;
open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!
