Who's the Boss?

I will appoint Peace as your overseer and Righteousness as your taskmaster.

Isaiah 60:17
I don't know about other countries, but at the heart of the U.S. mentality regarding work is the dream of "being your own boss." We often think of ourselves as lone rangers—independent, self-sufficient.

But the disciple is never alone, never a loner, never their own boss. We follow One who is known as the Prince of Peace and the Sun of Righteousness. Peace watches over us and righteousness gives us our marching orders.

Keeping this in mind also helps us order our lives. Our goal is not existence, but life. Our treasure is not wealth or power, but God's kindom.

For the kingdom of God is not food and drink but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
 Romans 14:17
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
O Christ, the Master Carpenter, who at the last through wood and nails, purchased our salvation, wield well your tools in the workshop of the world, so that we, who come rough-hewn to your bench, may here be fashioned to a truer beauty by your hand.
