Where There's Life

חי is the Hebrew word for "life"
You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.

Psalm 142:5
The expression, Where there's life there's hope, is not some modern English idiom. It's usually attributed to the ancient Roman scholar Cicero, but even he probably quoted it from an even more ancient source. This shows that the conventional wisdom that connects the two concepts of life and hope has been around since time immemorial.

Christian hope, however, goes beyond life—at least the biological existence that passes for life. In Christ, there is life beyond life, and so hope abides, along with faith and love, even in death, for these are the three sisters that light our way into the next life.

Now he is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to him all of them are alive.”
 Luke 20:38
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
O God of life: Give me such a faith in your life-giving power that my hope in you cannot die.
