Wisdom from Above

My child, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof,
Proverbs 3:11
The Word convicts us. Our consciences direct us. Our experiences inform us. We receive God's guidance dozens—maybe even hundreds—of times a day. But because our minds, ears, and eyes are attuned to other things, we're often unable to discern God's will from everything else that's going on within and around us. Social media, peer pressure, partisan speech, our own desires and priorities—these usually speak much more loudly than the guidance God provides.

The wisdom God sends our way leads to thoughtfulness, open hearts and minds, humility, and sincerity. If those things that are influencing me send me in the direction of arrogance or discord or dishonesty, then it is highly unlikely that it is the divine Voice that is speaking to my spirit.

Today, may we pray for the ability to listen to God, and to tune out those voices which lead us away from the peace that God intends for God's children.

But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without a trace of partiality or hypocrisy.
 James 3:17
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Lead me, Lord, lead me in thy righteousness,
make thy way plain before my face;
for it is thou, Lord, thou, Lord only,
that makest me dwell in safety.

Teach me, Lord, teach me truly how to live,
that I may come to know thee,
and in thy presence serve thee with gladness,
and sing songs of praise to thy glory.
 Samuel Wesley, George Strickling
