True Servanthood

Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness; put away the gods that your ancestors served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the Lord.

Joshua 24:14
How should Christians serve God? That seems like an open-ended question, and I suppose it is. But as Christian servants, we have a Master who can show us the answer. That's because the One we serve was himself a Servant. He cared for the physically and mentally ill. He dialogued with outsiders. He went out to eat with the most despicable of sinners. In the end, he handed over his body and shed his blood for the sake of those who didn't even understand him. If his servants wish to follow him into his risen life after Easter, how can we expect to forego servanthood before Easter?

Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also.
 John 12:26
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve; to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil, and not to seek for rest; to labor, and not to ask for reward—except to know that I am doing your will.
