From Morning until Night

Yours is the day, yours also the night; you established the luminaries and the sun.

Psalm 74:16
In the Hebrew Bible, people discovered God and were given rules for living. These rules encompassed their entire lives, from beginning to end, from morning until night. To embrace God meant to follow the rules. And yet such integrity of living was impossible for those mired in the human condition.

In Jesus Christ, God gifted us with a life lived from beginning to end. Night and day, the gospels tell us how Jesus embraced God's will for humanity, rising above the human condition to the glory of the Divine. From the cradle to the cross—and beyond—Christ's integrity demonstrates a life that truly belongs to God.

Through faith in the One who lived as God intended, our own imperfections are forgiven, and we, too, are raised from darkness to light. We can confess with confidence that we belong to God, and the life of Christ is our life, too.

Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.
 Romans 13:12-13
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Renew me, O eternal Light,
and let my heart and soul be bright,
illumined with the light of grace,
that issues from thy holy face.

Grant that I only thee may love,
and seek those things which are above,
till I behold thee face to face,
O Light eternal, through thy grace.
