The Way to God

Teach me your way, O Lord, that I may walk in your truth; give me an undivided heart to revere your Name.

Psalm 86:11
Many think it is a very exclusive attitude toward religion to say that Jesus is the only way to God. I suppose it is, but what a way! If I allow myself to think about what that might mean, I am astounded at the nature of God that I am shown in this Jesus:
  • If Jesus is the way to God, I must start my journey with the prophetic words of an unmarried woman—perhaps even a teenage girl—who is expecting a baby.
  • To continue, I must sojourn for a time in a stable and kneel at a feeding trough, there to wonder that in a feeble baby, I am to find the face of God.
  • To hear God's message I must follow an itinerate preacher who ministers to saint and sinner, rich and poor, patriot and traitor, man and woman, Israelite and foreigner alike.
  • What then am I to think that I must find God in the agonized face of a man undergoing execution? Can God really be found on a hill named after a skull, on a cross, and in the death of a despised criminal?
  • If I've gotten this far, then I've dealt with humility and acceptance and shock and grief. Now that my heart has been broken, the God that remains is no idol that I've created for myself, for how could I manufacture such a Deity? No, the God I find in the empty tomb—the God the Risen One has led me to—is the very God of life, the One whom death cannot overpower.
So is Jesus the only way to God? I will not condemn non-Christians. But the God that I have found in Jesus Christ can be found in no other.

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
 John 14:6
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Lord Jesus Christ, the way by which we travel: show me thyself, the truth that we must walk, and be in me the life that lifts us up to God, our journey's ending.
