Care for All

In the first chapter of the Bible, we're told that humankind was created in God's image. This teaching is repeated throughout both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament—though seldom as explicitly as it is in Genesis 1. Proverbs 17:5 comes close, when Solomon tells us that those who mock the poor insult their Maker.
The value the scriptures place on human life is due more than anything else to the One in whose image we were created. But that value at times appears to be greater when it is applied to the poor, the lowly, or the oppressed. I don't believe this is due to the fact that the lowly are inherently more valuable, but because they are so often undervalued—even completely devalued. If we do not honor the least among us, we honor no one, the Bible seems to say. In God's eyes, the poorest child is the equal of the most powerful king on earth.
This teaching reached its pinnacle in the birth, life, and death of Jesus Christ. The Baby in the barn grew into the homeless Teacher who was executed as a criminal on the outskirts of town. He it was who taught us that the way we treat the hungry, the thirsty, the sick, and the imprisoned was the way we treat the very Son of God. Let us therefore place equal value on all our neighbors' lives, and care no less for the least than we do for the greatest.

Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy.
 Matthew 5:7
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Make us worthy, Lord, to serve our fellow humans throughout the world who live and die in poverty and hunger. Give them through our hands this day their daily bread, and by our understanding love, give peace and joy.
