Childlike Faith

The Lord is the true God; he is the living God and the everlasting King.
Jeremiah 10:10
God is God and beyond our imagining. Whatever we say about God is commentary that may or may not be edifying. All of our theological posturing and every creed ever written and adopted by a religious body is a mere attempt at describing that which cannot be described.

This is why Jesus promotes childlike faith. Jesus loved the wise and the religious. Just as he did not avoid the outcasts, he spent time with the pharisees. But he did not dispute with them. When he answered their questions, it was usually with another question. They wanted answers, but Jesus showed them God.

Thinking about our religion is great. Indeed we should study and meditate and dive into the deep end—but not for the sake of disputing with others and not to make ourselves look good. To have the kind of faith Jesus recommends—a childlike faith—is to ask genuine questions and to trust God for the answer.

We'll never be able to wrap our minds around God. But we can understand the love of the One who received the little children and blessed them.

Jesus prayed: “O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, thank you for hiding these things from those who think themselves wise and clever, and for revealing them to the childlike."
 Matthew 11:25 (NLT)
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Give me a childlike faith, Lord, filled with trust in you, love for others, and forgiveness when I feel wronged.
