Bearing Fruit

The surviving remnant of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.
1 Kings 19:30
We who bear the Name of Christ, how do we show it to the world? By posting religious memes on social media? By going to church when it's convenient? By watching "Christian" TV?

These activities may or may not be okay. But if a Christian's roots are truly deep enough, then the fruit they'll bear will be much more significant than what they tweet or post on facebook.

What then is the fruit that a disciple of Christ should bear? Paul actually gives us a very nice list: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Jesus boils the list down even further by telling us that love alone identifies us as Christians, and with this the apostle agrees. Love manifests itself in a number of ways—all of them good. It is the growth that results when the roots reach deep into soil nourished by the cross of Christ.

If the root is holy, then the branches also are holy.
 Romans 11:16
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
O Lord, you have taught us that without love whatever we do is worth nothing. Send your Holy Spirit and pour into our hearts your greatest gift, which is love, the true bond of peace and of all virtue, without which whoever lives is accounted dead before you. Grant this for the sake of your only Son Jesus Christ.
