Maundy Thursday

To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength.

Isaiah 45:23-24
On this day, we remember the night before Jesus was crucified—the night when he shared with his disciples the bread and the wine, saying, "This is my body," and "This is my blood." This meal is reënacted and these words spoken all over the world, every day. They are among the most oft-repeated words in the history of language. They are the words of God's self-giving, words that remind us in a way that is both incredibly intimate and incredibly simple that God is with us when we gather. God is in the words that we speak and the food that we eat. And there is nothing beyond God's willingness to be present among us.

I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live forever.
 John 6:51
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Holy God, on the night of his betrayal, our Lord Jesus shared himself with his disciples in the bread and the wine. Help us to receive his gift with reverence, and may this holy meal strengthen us to share ourselves with our neighbors in his Name.
