At the Gates of Scripture

Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.

Teach me the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul.
Save me, O Lord, from my enemies; I have fled to you for refuge.
Teach me to do your will, for you are my God.
Let your good spirit lead me on a level path.
Ps. 143:8-10

To practice morning devotions is like hearing the gospel anew each day. But I have to listen:

  • Where to listen: At the gates of scripture; in the halls of meditation; close behind the footsteps of Jesus.
  • When to listen: In the morning—as early and as often as possible.
  • How to listen: In simple and humble dependence.
  • Why to listen: To know the way I should go.*
  • Holy One, I arise early and turn to you as the sun rises. As its rays give light and warmth to the world, may I feel your love and guidance throughout the day to come, for it is in you, and you alone, that I have placed my faith. Amen.
