The Source of Love

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might.
Deuteronomy 6:5
To love God with all we've got—Jesus said that this was the greatest commandment. Love can do many things for us, but it's often just a throwaway verb. "I'd love to get out of here," or "I love that shirt." In neither of those examples does the use even begin to approach the true meaning.

And to show that love was not an empty word on his part, Jesus gave us the ultimate example: He loved us with all he had. He gave it all for us in his sacrifice on the cross. True human love has God's love as its source. It's not just hankering, attraction, or desire. It is giving one's self away.

We love because he first loved us.
 1 John 4:19
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
My Jesus, I love thee, I know thou art mine;
for thee all the follies of sin I resign.
My gracious Redeemer, my Savior art thou;
if ever I loved thee, my Jesus, ’tis now.
 Wm. Featherston (written when he was 16)
