Thanksgiving Day

In you the orphan finds mercy.
Hosea 14:3
Today is Thanksgiving, when we celebrate all that God has done for us through the remembrance of a meal shared by two different worlds. There was great promise in 1621 for respect and coöperation between two peoples who very much needed each other. Though the ideal was quickly lost in reality, the dream of the unity of humankind persists even four hundred years later.

These words from Charles Spurgeon (Oct. 23, 1873) remind me of the Source of unity and the true goal of humankind:

"You are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God. A part of the family of the great Householder, even God! Citizenship is well enough in its place, but citizens do not always know one another. But we are of the household of God—we are brought into an intimate relationship with one another through our Elder Brother who makes us to be the children of the great Father in Heaven!"

So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are citizens with the saints and also members of the household of God.
 Ephesians 2:19
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
For the beauty and wonder of your creation, in earth and sky and sea; for all that is gracious in the lives of your people, revealing the image of Christ: We thank you, O God.
✙
For our daily food and drink, our homes and families and friends; for minds to think and hearts to love and hands to serve: We thank you, O God.
✙
For hearth and strength to work, for leisure to rest and play; for the brave and courageous, who are patient in suffering and faithful in adversity: We thank you, O God.
✙
For all valiant seekers after truth, liberty, and justice; for the communion of saints, in all times and places: We thank you, O God.
✙
Above all, we give you thanks for the great mercies and promises given to us in Christ Jesus our Lord: To him be praise and glory, with you and the Holy Spirit, both now and forevermore.
