Darkness

If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,” even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day.

Psalm 139:11-12
Jesus said he is the Light of the world. Paul tells us that the light is good, and that we save evil deeds until the night. It's no wonder, then, that many of us think of the night as being bad.
The Bible uses this metaphor because we cannot always see (or be seen) in the darkness. But darkness was created by God, and is not in and of itself evil. Just as a seed needs darkness to germinate so that it can bring forth fruit, so goodness can be brought about in the night. The work of God continues, day or night, so I have nothing to fear from the darkness.

As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
 Luke 4:40
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
We thank thee that thy church, unsleeping,
while earth rolls onward into light,
through all the world her watch is keeping,
and rests not now by day or night.
