Great Things

The Lord has done great things for us, and we rejoiced.

In his commentary on Psalm 126 from around the year 400, Augustine of Hippo had this to say about the third verse:

Consider, my brothers and sisters, if Zion does not at present say this among non-believers throughout the whole world; consider if people are not turning to the Church. In the whole world our redemption is received, and people answer Amen. So this is how those who dwell in Jerusalem speak to the nations; how captives speak, destined to return; and pilgrims, too, sighing for their homeland. What do they say? The Lord has done great things for us, and this is why we rejoice. Have they done anything for themselves? No, they have only done themselves ill, for they have sold themselves under sin. The Redeemer came, and it was he who did the good things for them.

It's amazing how we can find new covenant grace, even centuries before the birth of the One who came to proclaim it. Let us, therefore, look for God's actions on behalf of people in all times and places, and give to God the glory that is God's alone.

Help me, O God, to see in my life the ways you have been at work in the past, and how you are at work even now. And help me to entrust my future to you.
