Breaking Bread

But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.
Psalm 40:16
Today I'm thinking about the 2020-21 lockdown, a time that was unimaginable until it actually happened. For more than an entire year, the congregation refrained from meeting in person. It is natural that during such a time, faithfulness would fall to the wayside and the church would languish. But that's not what happened. Though our meetings were online, they still happened. We sought the Lord, and we rejoiced. We were connected by our remote worship, by Zoom prayer meetings, and intentional communication with each other (by phone, email, text—even visits through the storm door). But most of all, we were connected through sharing weekly in communion. We weren't in the same room, but we all partook of the same bread and drank from the same cup when we remembered the love of God in the sacrament of the Lord's Supper. Whether we are in a church sanctuary or in our individual kitchens, God's people are one in the Spirit and one in our praise of our Creator and Redeemer.

Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people.
 Acts 2:46-47
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Thank you, Lord, that in the breaking of the bread and the sharing of the cup, you show us your love and you unite us as one.

After your own thanksgivings & petitions, close with the Lord's Prayer.
