Jesus Is Coming

See, the Lord God comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him.

Isaiah 40:10
Apocalyptic literature usually involves fantastic imagery of things to come. Jesus was not such a visionary... at least not usually. But in Luke 21 we read a revelation of Jesus. Christians have for two thousand years imagined that this informs them of the exact method of Jesus' return.

Even the most straightforward prophecies are hard to interpret, but apocalyptic visions are much more difficult. By their very nature, they are highly symbolic and impossible to take literally. The real point of Luke 21 is that we should live as though we are already in Christ's presence. The religion preached by Jesus was not some otherworldly pie-in-the-sky belief system, but a way of life that honors God by trusting in God's word and serving our neighbors. If we ignore these teachings, then there's no reason to imagine we can predict the time and manner of his return. And if we practice these teachings, then we're living as though he's already returned.

Stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.
 Luke 21:28
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Help me to live in your presence, O Christ, loving God with all I have and loving my neighbors as myself.
