Morning and Evening

You make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy.
Psalm 65:8
I've always loved the 65th Psalm, but in Holy Dying (1651), Jeremy Taylor pointed out something that had never occurred to me before—namely, that the gateways of the morning and the evening referred to childhood and old age. We enter mortality through the gateway of the morning and leave it through the gateway of the evening, and both are an occasion for great rejoicing. Through the one we enter time, and through the other we enter immortality.

This is the good news, that all our lives belong to God, from beginning to end. God's Realm lies within us; we need fear neither this mortal life nor its end. We belong to God both now and in eternity.

Jesus went on through cities and villages, proclaiming and bringing the good news of the kingdom of God.
 Luke 8:1
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
Lord God, joy is your gift; beauty, abundance, and peace are tokens of your work in all creation. Work also in our lives, that by these signs we may see the splendor of your love and praise you through Jesus Christ our Lord.
