Hagar

The angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.”

Genesis 21:17-18
I remember a few months ago coming across a lesson taught by a religion that I don't usually agree with. The lesson was about Hagar, and I found it disturbing in the way it portrayed her. It said that, after she became pregnant, "Hagar began to despise her mistress." But the Bible doesn't actually say this. It says that Sarai (Sarah) accused Hagar of looking down her nose at her, not that Hagar ever actually despised Sarah.
In reality, many bad things happened to Hagar, but she never lost her faith. When things seemed bleakest, she could see God through the darkness. She did not let the injustices she experienced at the hands of other humans  diminish her trust in the One she called El Roi—"the God who sees me."

Lift your drooping hands and strengthen your weak knees, and make straight paths for your feet.
 Hebrews 12:12-13
Prayer after thinking about today's devotion:
In the midst of problems and injustice, Lord, help me to believe that you see me and that your word lifts me up.
